Project will save the World Three Million Tons Per Year of CO2 – equivalent to the emissions of 700,000 cars.
The new green hydrogen project in NEOM is the first step in creating a new industry in NEOM and the Kingdom, creating jobs and contributing to economic growth and diversity. This project positions NEOM as a key contributor to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan to grow and diversify the Saudi economy, the flagship project of Saudi Arabia’s post-oil diversification plan.
Green hydrogen is a form of renewable energy, it can be used as fuel for many different types of transportation and in power plants and can also be used as a green ingredient across a variety of manufacturing industries such as steel, cement and fertilizer production among many other things. It is seen by many as a DNA for green chemicals, green fuels and the circular carbon economy. These uses make green hydrogen important for many of Saudi Arabia’s blue-chip companies such as Saudi Aramco, Sabic and Maaden. Saudi Arabia is committed to leading the world in producing hydrogen to help reduce CO2 emissions and combat climate change.
“Harnessing the unique profile of Neom’s sun and wind to convert water to hydrogen, this project will yield a totally clean source of energy on a massive scale and will save the world over three million tons of CO2 emissions annually and eliminate smog-forming emissions and other pollutants from the equivalent of over 700,000 cars,”
said Seifi Ghasemi, CEO for Air Products in a press statement.
NEOM will become one of the world’s leading centers for green hydrogen as it is one of the few places on Earth where green hydrogen can be made competitively in very large quantities. The unique combination of wind and sun in NEOM provides the ideal power source to generate clean energy which in turn can be used to produce green hydrogen to meet the needs of energy importing regions like Japan and Europe. NEOM itself will be a showcase for the various usages of green hydrogen when building its new, technology-driven economy and meet its ambition to be powered 100% by renewable energy.

NEOM – Village for the World’s Most Ambitious Project
NEOM will be the home and workplace to more than a million residents from around the world. It will include towns and cities, ports and enterprise zones, research centers, sports and entertainment venues, and tourist destinations.
As a hub for innovation, entrepreneurs, business leaders and companies will come to research, incubate and commercialize new technologies and enterprises in groundbreaking ways. Residents of NEOM will embody an international ethos and embrace a culture of exploration, risk-taking and diversity – all supported by a progressive law compatible with international norms and conducive to economic growth.
Residents will be accommodated in living areas built around green spaces comprising orchards, vegetable plots and ornamental gardens. The village will also have waste management and recycling facilities to eliminate the landfill and to protect the environment.
In keeping with NEOM’s sport-for-all philosophy, residents will enjoy a range of recreation facilities including cricket, soccer fields, tennis, basketball courts, gymnasiums, running tracks, swimming pools and indoor games rooms.
NEOM, the flagship project of Saudi Arabia’s post-oil diversification plan, is being built on a 26,500 km2 area in the Northwestern of the Kingdom. It offers unique investment opportunities in economic sectors and real-estate development.
