Wazoku-Challenge: Pulse Crops for Agricultural Diversity

Challenge: Pulse Crops for Agricultural Diversity, Intensification & Sustainability

  • Award: $15000 USD
  • Deadline: 3RD OCT 2022
  • Challenge type: IDEATION

ABSTRACT

Pulse crops are part of the legume family, with common varieties including a diversity of species such as fava beans, lentils, field peas and common bean. Corteva Agriscience is seeking new cropping systems that incorporate a pulse crop to increase the amount of protein rich food grown on existing farmland while reducing agricultural inputs.

This is an Ideation Challenge with a guaranteed award for at least one submitted solution.

OVERVIEW

Options to increase the agricultural output and improve system biodiversity of existing farmland include adding new crops into the rotation, growing more than one crop in a single year, and maintaining continuous ground cover.  Pulse crops (legume crops with edible seeds) are particularly of interest for incorporation into a cropping system due to their ability to fix nitrogen from the air and their high protein content. This type of agriculture intensification has many benefits including additional and more diverse sources of income for farmers from an alternative harvestable crop, providing an additional protein source to meet a global growing demand, reducing agricultural inputs like nitrogen-based fertilizers, capturing additional carbon from the atmosphere each year, and improved soil health. Thus, Corteva is searching for innovative ideas for new pulse crops that can be incorporated into new or existing cropping systems.

This is an Ideation Challenge, which has the following unique features:

  • There is a guaranteed award. The award(s) will be paid to the best submission(s) as solely determined by the Seeker. The total payout will be $15,000, with at least one award being no smaller than $5,000 and no award being smaller than $2,000.
  • The Solvers are not required to transfer exclusive intellectual property rights to the Seeker. Rather, by submitting a proposal, the Solver grants to the Seeker a royalty-free, perpetual and non-exclusive license to use any information included in this proposal, including for promotional purposes.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on October 3, 2022.
