The digital factor – AI could bring billions to the German economy

Digital technologies and AI offer great potential for business and society. They can create completely new fields of activity and economic sectors, bring about innovations and strengthen social participation.

330 billion euros – that’s how much generative artificial intelligence (AI) could contribute to gross value added (GVA) in the future. This would require use in at least 50 percent of companies. The use of AI is crucial to ensuring the competitiveness of companies in Germany in the next few years.

At the level of individual economic actors, the potential arises from the possibility of optimizing and automating processes and thus using existing resources more efficiently. Against this background, a study carried out by IW Consult on behalf of Google examines the importance and potential of digital and intelligent technologies in general and artificial intelligence in particular for the economy and society in Germany.

As a starting point for the study, 2,068 companies and 1,012 people in Germany were surveyed about the role of digital applications in operations and everyday life. According to IW Consult, the survey is representative. According to an estimate, around 600,000 companies in Germany are already using artificial intelligence. This corresponds to around 17 percent of all companies in Germany.
