The Boston Dynamics AI Institute is Coming to Zurich – New office set to open in 2024

The Boston Dynamics AI Institute is focused on solving the most important problems in robotics and artificial intelligence to achieve fundamental advances in the engineering and science of robotics.

We’ve spent the last year ramping up our research, engineering, and operations teams. We now have over 150 full-time staff and 10 visiting professors occupying more than 100,000 square feet of lab and office space in the heart of Cambridge’s Kendall Square. Our team consists of engineers, researchers, developers, designers, technicians, data scientists, and administrators — with all the skills needed to develop future generations of advanced robots.

To support further growth and attract the best talent in Europe, the AI Institute is opening an office in Zurich in early 2024. The Zurich team will work to further advance intelligent, agile, and dexterous robotic systems that will operate in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

The Institute is focused on solving the most important problems in artificial intelligence related to robotics, with the goal of achieving fundamental advances in the engineering and science of robotics and other intelligent machines. We bring together remarkable talent in AI, robotics, computing, and data science in a research organization that combines the best features of academic research labs with the best features of corporate development labs. The Zurich team will expand the Institute’s focus in core areas such as AI, hardware design, machine learning, dexterous mobile manipulation, and robot ethics, and will help us connect to talent, universities, and research organizations in the vibrant European ecosystem.

Hyundai Motor Group announced the launch of Boston Dynamics AI Institute on August 12, 2023.

The Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics will make an initial investment of more than $400 million in the new Institute, which will be led by Marc Raibert, founder of Boston Dynamics.

“Our mission is to create future generations of advanced robots and intelligent machines that are smarter, more agile, perceptive and safer than anything that exists today,” said Marc Raibert, executive director of Boston Dynamics AI Institute. “The unique structure of the Institute — top talent focused on fundamental solutions with sustained funding and excellent technical support — will help us create robots that are easier to use, more productive, able to perform a wider variety of tasks, and that are safer working with people.”

To achieve such advances, the Institute will invest resources across the technical areas of cognitive AI, athletic AI and organic hardware design, with each discipline contributing to progress in advanced machine capabilities. In addition to developing technology with its own staff, the Institute plans to partner with universities and corporate research labs.
